Kāhu-o-te-rangi~ our guide

2. The hawk

"we see thee"

As we drove home after our wānanga, we noticed something unusual indeed...(but after our 2 days in the cabin, we'd think that nothing surprised us anymore!) But this did...the birds were following us. Birds in groups of threes swooped around the car-they danced around us, then flew toward the deepest blue. "We see thee".

Then the next set would have its dash, then the next, then the next...It felt like the birdies were showing off in front of us...(but were they doing it for us?) It felt so surreal! The clouds in the sky even depicted images of birds, triangles and flying objects...dam, we even saw a white kotuku...painted on a sign on the side of the road! "Triiiiipppppppy"-we laughed.

There was one among them all that stayed with us for the entirety of the trip. It was Kāhu~the hawk. We instinctively knew who he was. Our guide for the mahi that we will be doing together.

Imagine our shock when another kāhu saw us coming and gave his life over...for us...well no not for us, for the kaupapa, for the mahi.

We stopped the car and picked him up. Whoa! He was a big one and he was still warm. I could feel the grief overtake me. The kuia used me as a vessel to karanga the hawk. We sat in the car with the lifeless body. The kuia said karakia and a korero to the wairua of the manu, allowing the manu to interact with us.

"We see thee"~he said. "the birds follow thee. For you carry the central beam...yes we see thee"

He told us that he was happy, over joyed-yipppppeeee,(that is the best way to describe his emotions!) because he had accomplished his mission, and because he was tired..."I get to go home, I get to go home" He had been waiting for the time to sacrifice his life for the tapatoru. (The tapatoru is way bigger than us 3 ladies, we are merely parts of the whole). He also told us that the negativity and destruction on the Mother~Papatūānuku, is taking its toll. The birds do not trust Man. His heart ached for Man. And he cried. He cried for his brothers, for Man. But now at peace "we be free, we be free" .

Oh hello. There he is. Our kāhu. Our guide. Still with us. We felt so loved and protected as we travelled on...into the unknown.
